Open the Gates – With more than 31 football fields of show space, CES attendees have to crowd in opening day and walk themselves ragged in hopes of not just seeing all the show but seeing what will win/fail big in the coming year. While a few folks have said CES is on its last leg, we wonder if they were at the same show we were this month.

More than 3,100 exhibitors squeezed into a mere 1.861 million net square feet (31+ football fields) of exhibit space and the show drew more than 153,000 attendees.

We promised we would come back with our most interesting finds from CES 2012 and it was the Monster Headphones at booth #1303. Monster brought out the celebs and showed off some stunning technology that is extremely important in the digital era

Happy New Year! My name is Jade. I'm an activist, filmmaker, entrepreneur and music video producer who happened to be deaf. Friedrich Nietzsche said, "Without music, life would be a mistake." Music is a big part of many people's lives. For some, music is life and for others, it’s entertainment. However, for some of us, we often felt taken for granted. Consumers with different type of hearing loss everywhere do not have access to music. While the New Year has just arrived, everyone is looking forward to new change! I know my team is!

We hope the new year will bring change for those who have been deprived from some certain technology: An app, ASLTUNES™ that will give people with hearing loss and the sign language consumers an opportunity to finally have access to music video incorporate in American Sign Language and music tracks that can also be incorporated with live lyrics from their portable devices, like an iPhone, iPad, etc.

I don't know what to tell you, but I do not see anyone making that happen. I've been working on this idea for five years now. Many people think of this as an impossible business venture. Well, they are wrong! I've done my homework. I know numbers. I know exactly what we need. Napoleon Bonaparte said, "Impossible is a word found only in the dictionary for fools." Please don't be like them. We need believers. If it's not out there in the market for us, then I usually invent or develop the concept. Second, the makers in the music and technology industry are too busy trying to stay afloat among the top Fortune 500 companies to even pay attention to such a small disenfranchised niche market: the 36 million Deaf and Hard of hearing consumers.

My team and I need your support to make ASLTUNES™ happen. We just launched a Kickstarter campaign a couple days ago. Kickstarter is powered by a unique all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. Our fundraising goal is $50,000. However, we’ve set a target for $25,000 this way we surpass it and shoot for another $25,000 more, all within 57 days until February 24th. Typically, it costs $2,500 and up to license a song. Then we hire our talents, rent the locations, shoot the production, where we produce a music video of that song and incorporate it in ASL. We have a goal to produce at least 10 music videos for the year 2012. The more funds we collected, the better our chance of producing more professional quality music videos. Not to mention, hire an app and program developer so that the music videos can be downloaded from our app store.

SYNOPSIS

Set in NYC, Carefree Somalia (Sylvie Marc-Charles) seemed pretty content with life: Got a good-looking boyfriend, Zavier (Omar Jaslin) for a musician, is in school to become a fashion designer, got her own place, is extrovert, likes to hit up the clubs just to feel the music, and has her own circle of friends who accepts her for who she is. A recurring complication soon becomes an issue between Somalia and her boyfriend that bifurcate their relationship. Her relationship with Zavier is put to the test when every personal experience becomes communal.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

The film underscores the integration of the relationship between the hearing and the Deaf communities as well as other cultures. We believe in integration and interaction that places strong emphasis in addressing communication barriers and toppling them. Thank you for stopping by! My name is Ann Marie "Jade" Bryan. I go by the name Jade. I am an award winning filmmaker who happened to be deaf. I graduated from NYU with a BFA degree in filmmaking.

WE WATCH: White Films. Black Films. Gay Films. Hispanic Films. Foreign Films. Children Films. The list goes on.
Now, what's wrong with this picture?

We're lacking MULTICULTURAL DEAF AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN FILMS within Deaf Culture. Like Black Culture, Gay Culture, Hispanic Culture and the list goes on, we DO have a culture.

I launched a Kickstarter Campaign to raise $8,600 (with the hope to surpass $10,000) for a new screenplay staged reading to develop an urban social issue story to increase conscious awareness about Multicultural Deaf and African Americans.

FACT: I do know that many of us despise the term "underdog" because, mainly, in an imperfect world fraught with ignorance, prejudice, inconsiderate and the unknowledgeable, we have little or almost no status in the world of cinema.

FACT: I do know that we can and will rise from the invisible and gain more exposure in the world of cinema, not limited to the world of Deaf Cinema, only if and when you do join and start supporting my campaign movements. Its time to step out of the box!

FALSE: There are no or almost no Multicultural Deaf and African-American Deaf talents and actors. That's completely and utterly false! WE ARE EVERYWHERE!

FACT: We've been here, just invisible. It's time the Hollywood, Independent mainstream and the Hearing community outside of our own community allow the Multicultural Deaf and African-American Deaf talents and actors the opportunity and the platform to shine for their talent, to be identified and equally recognized as a human being first. That is the respect we deserved.

As I stated before, are you aware, in case you haven't noticed, that there are no independent or mainstream story containing film with a majority of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing African-American cast on the silver screen or on Television? Well, we're about to change that, with YOUR help! It takes a village of community to raise awareness, enlightenment and exposure of Multicultural Deaf and African-American Deaf Culture.

HERE'S THE STORY

THE CAMPAIGN PROJECT: THE DOUBLE LIFE OF ZHANE RAIN

Allow me to tell you a bit about my project. I recently launched a Kickstarter Campaign over a month ago to raise $8,600 or more for a new screenplay staged reading about an urban story of an 18-year-old, African-American high school senior with three generations of both hearing and Deaf family members that have an impact on her upbringing.

When Zhane was six, she had a horrible accident which caused her to slip into a coma for three weeks. As a consequence, she lost most memories of her early childhood. The accident also left her suffering from an aggressive hearing loss. The film tells a story about a lost girl who is trying to find herself in a self-respecting Deaf family and overcoming an unusual phobia as a result of a very dark secret, which takes a toll on her mental health, spirituality and emotional well-being.

Although, this story is fictional and based on factual experience, I wrote this story because I am a product of an accident, and I do believe this is what the society is waiting for, a movie with a predominately and professional African-American Deaf and sign language actors. Not to mention, Deaf talents who are rap artists, dancers, stunt person, American Sign Language Coach, production crew and so forth. Our community has been waiting for someone to tell their story.

MICA RUNWAY is the leading arts and entertainment high-end event in New York City exclusively dedicated to showcasing works by emerging filmmakers, up-and-coming fashion designers, striving talents, literary and visual artists who utilize American Sign Language (ASL). MICA RUNWAY strives to provide access to the film, fashion, art and visual art worlds for these individuals who may be intimidated, oppressed or ignored by the gatekeepers of the elite art, fashion and entertainment industries.MICA stands for Multicultural International Consortium of [Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing] Artists and Advocates is celebrating its ten-year Anniversary. ISAAC MIZRAHI SPRING 2010 COLLECTION

Isaac debuted his Spring 2010 collection during New York Fashion Week in the Tent at Bryant Park. Titled “Astaire Case or Obstacle Course,” Isaac found inspiration in the 1950’s films of Fred Astaire. Style.com wrote, “It was the eveningwear, with hints of postwar Charles James, though, that stole the show.”

This one definitely has a story to tell.

What’s up, New York? You know, it has been my 5th seasonal New York Fashion Week shows at the Bryant Park. Some of the designers’ collections, whether new or returning, that I have seen didn't even need to be inside the tents, but elsewhere. Sometimes, my partner, Jubil and I would have these discussions about who would wear what collections in the streets; whether some of the designers were simply putting on a show, for the sake of arts. It is always fascinating to see what new collections or creations the designers will show each season.

For the recent Spring 2010 collection by Isaac Mizrahi, was by far one of the best fashion show presentations I have seen. I love the set up. I love how the lighting was used as props. Simple, yet elegant and denotes a touch of class, especially exhibiting feelings of nostalgia.

It was also totally phenomenal, creative and brilliant of having each model make an entrance to the runway and exit upstage theatre-like. I don't think anyone has done anything like this before! It is always the "too safe" boring runway presentations. Very few reputable, well-known designers could afford to surpass their vision of how their fashion presentations should be. You can tell Isaac took risk to put it all together perfectly! It didn't feel like you were inside the Tent at the Bryant Park, except it gives you the ambience that you were inside a studio watching a filming of a fashion presentation of the early 30's 0 40's.

Loved the idea how the guy with the large umbrella greets some of the models and sprinkled water come raining over the umbrella. Very Fred Astaire style and classic, yes indeed. It was a standing ovation for Isaac. The applauds were long! I remember my hands were hurting from clapping. The press loved it. The fashion enthusiasts loved it. My partner, Jubil and I were so glad we were able to witness this wonderful presentation. This is what fashion shows are all about. Thanks to Isaac’s PR people for giving us this opportunity.

I was glad my photographer, Steve Martinez, got there early to secure his media riser spot! Several accredited photographers were unfortunately turned away.

Isaac Mizrahi is an American fashion designer and the creative director of Liz Claiborne. He is best known for his eponymous fashion lines. He sure did live up to his name! Congratulations, Isaac! I look forward to seeing your Spring 2010 Collection at the Bryant Park! I invite you to enjoy viewing the images of Isaac Mizrahi's Spring 2010 collection! Also, check out his video of the show!
