Day 2 at the Tribeca Film Festival.
PANEL - Theater Producing - Watch Video here.
The world of theater continues to grow in access and storytelling in part due to some exciting theater producers. This panel will discuss the changing elements of the theater world with some of its interesting producers. Panelists bios: https://www.tribecafilm.com/films/theater-producing-2025
I was curious about the response I would receive from the panelists regarding funding opportunities and collaborating with BLACK MUSICAL PRODUCERS for my musical play, 'Somalia.' One of their responses was predictable. Why didn't they mention George C. Wolfe or themselves?
Not that I have anything against Deaf West or the idea of collaborating withthem, but it is essential to recognize that Black Deaf stories do not exist in isolation within 'Deaf culture' or solely as part of the white Deaf experience. Start learning to address other cultures, Black theater producers, and BIPOC connections as the go-to for resources. I have been saying, with my whole chest and conviction, that the Black Deaf lived experience is not monolithic. The more narratives produced about the intersectionality of our voices, the better they broaden awareness of our dimensionality.
This is why it is essential to produce Black deaf stories through various mediums, including film, television, and theater, from our unique perspective, to broaden their understanding and perception beyond the limitations of white deaf narratives. To be frank, it is increasingly exhausting. However, we are grateful to the panelists for sharing their wealth of experiences, knowledge, and resources with us.
“God created black people and black people created style.” - George C. Wolfe
“Theater should address the stories of its communities, or I don't know why it's here.” - George C. Wolfe
